Gridfarce By Lamplight (Omnibus)

San Francisco's The Cave-Ins actually do really sound like Television. Though
it was The Strokes that received a truckload of attention for their NYC Cool
sound, they never and still don't sound anything like Tom Verlaine's band. Gridfarce
By Lamplight is what Marquee Moon must have sounded like back in 1977. Though
it can't be considered very fresh or original, this record is a fantastic, similar
take on Television's creatively slow not-punk-but-what-else-do-you-call-it sound.
There are some other obvious influences on this record like Jonathan Richman
and The Modern Lovers and The Beach Boys, and that just makes it stronger. Gridfarce
sounds so lethargic and unenthusiastic that it's a completely spectacular piece
of music to hear. The singing sounds like they couldn't be arsed, the organs
sound like they're dying and the handclaps sound half asleep. "Mystic Mayo"
appears to be The Velvet Underground's long lost classic (complete with an exact
Lou Reed impersonation on the mic) and "Bring It Down" appears to be the same,
another lost VU classic. Don't let the inspirations discourage you, The Cave-Ins
are the next great band in the U.S. waiting to be discovered, and you should
already know them by now. A.
