The Shins "When I Goose-Step" 7" (Omnibus)
Jeez Omnibus, are any of your releases bad? The Shins proves another release
on this label that they put out quality music. This band reminds me of Belle
& Sebastian, but even more 60's mod pop sounding. You've got that side ways
head shaking thing going on here that works very well and is definately
toe-tappin'. A band like this shows that the boundaries of indie-pop are
stretching out further and further to break down ways of what to use and
what not to use. This is something I would love to see live. (JK)
DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY
The Shins "When I Goose-Step" b/w "The Gloating Sun" (Omnibus)
Now this record feels like it belongs in the 1960's. No cover, the big
whole, and 45 rpm speed set the stage, but even the music sounds like it
belongs in the 60's. But it actually just takes heavily from that era,
building wonderful, light pop songs that you can't help but love.
"When I
Goose-Step" is one of the best retro pop songs I've heard this year.
Lovely, mature vocals that are near perfect combine with a very poppy, light
rhythm and some nice guitar and keyboards to make a simply wonderful little
pop song. The synthesizers provide a nice effect-laden background that is
easy to overlook based on the beautiful pop structure, but it builds the
song so nicely, providing a perfect back-drop.
"The Gloating Sun" sound
something like a Byrds song, only with some great
keyboards providing a lovely background again. The main instrument here is
some heavily-played acoustic guitar, with a slightly folkish feel, and the
vocals again match the sound near perfectly. But with those cool, slightly
funky keyboard effects in the background, this song is something else. It's
also very short, unfortunately.
Not a whole lot of music here, just two short
and sweet 60's pop songs given
a more modern feel with some excellent keyboard backdrops. The vocals are
the highlight, deep and mature and confident, just wonderful. The Shins
contain members of Flake Music, a band I'm not familiar with. And for real
indie rock credibility, they're opening on tour this fall for Modest Mouse
with The Black Heart Procession. How's that for a diverse but wonderful
combination? Just make sure you don't miss The Shins. -Jeff

The Shins - "When I Goose-Step" 7" (Omnibus)
This is a side project of Flake Music (all of 'em, I hear!), and
while it doesn't sound much like the Flake Music I've heard, it's
more akin to the Hang Ups or the Waves. I can even hear a tiny
bit of Red Sleeping Beauty, too, in a light airy-type way. Both
songs are nice and short; quite mellow, but still upbeat. Gentle
guitars, drums, etc. I'd like to hear more, please! MTQ=2/2
